Detox & Gut Health by Dr. Daria Schaff ND

When people hear the word “detox,” they often think of juice cleanses, detox supplements, or liver support formulas. The truth is, for a detox to be effective, the gut and digestive system must be supported first.

Your gut plays a central role in detoxification by eliminating waste and toxins that have already been processed by the liver. It also helps clear hormones that the body no longer needs. In addition, the gut microbiome plays an important role in regulating digestive pathways, influencing how substances are broken down, processed, and removed from the body.

Supporting a patient’s gut health and digestive function is essential to any detox plan.

What I Focus on First:

1. Bowel Movements (BM)
Bowel movements should occur at least once to twice daily and feel complete and easy to pass. If elimination is sluggish, toxins and hormones that were processed by the liver can be reabsorbed.

2. Fibre
Fibre supports bowel regularity and feeds beneficial gut bacteria. Aim for 2–3 cups of vegetables daily, along with sources like ground flaxseed and chia seeds. These simple additions can make a significant difference in detox support.

3. Probiotics
Probiotics can be a wonderful addition — but not all probiotics are the same. Strain selection, dosing, and timing matter. Working with a naturopathic doctor can help determine if a probiotic is appropriate and which type would be most beneficial for your unique presentation.

The Gut–Liver Connection:

The liver metabolizes and processes hormones and toxins first. The gut then takes over to eliminate them from the body. If the gut is not functioning properly, the liver has to work harder, which can contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, bloating, and hormone imbalance.

Supporting digestion during a detox may include:

  • Incorporating bitter foods like arugula and radicchio to gently stimulate digestive function

  • Practicing mindful eating

  • Avoiding distracted or rushed meals to support the nervous system’s role in digestion

Detoxing does not need to be intense or restrictive to be effective. It is about supporting your body with key nutrients, whole foods, and lifestyle practices that strengthen both liver and elimination pathways.

Your body is already designed to detox — it simply needs the right foundations, which include a well-functioning gut!
