Omega 3’s and Arthritis

Omega 3’s and Arthritis

Written By Dr. Daria Schaff ND

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods such as flaxseed, walnuts, and fatty fish like salmon. Omega-3s are essential components of our cell membranes and play an important role in supporting brain function, cardiovascular health, metabolism, mood, and regulating inflammation. They are also commonly used therapeutically during pregnancy and for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

Omega-3s are often recommended by both physicians and veterinarians to support arthritis because they have natural anti-inflammatory properties. By helping reduce inflammation within the joints, they may decrease pain and stiffness, improve mobility, and support overall joint health and quality of life. Although they won't cure arthritis, they can be an effective part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

A common question I hear is, "Can I get enough omega-3s from food alone?" The answer depends on your individual health goals. For general health, regularly consuming omega-3-rich foods may be sufficient. However, if you're aiming for therapeutic benefits—such as reducing inflammation, supporting cardiovascular health, or addressing specific health concerns—a high-quality supplement is often the most practical way to achieve an effective dose.

What to look for when choosing an omega-3 supplement:

  • Quality and sourcing: Choose a reputable brand that tests for heavy metals, contaminants, and oxidation to ensure purity and potency.

  • EPA and DHA content: Look beyond the front label and check how much EPA and DHA each serving provides. Different ratios may be more appropriate depending on your health goals.

  • Total omega-3 content: Some products contain a large amount of filler oils w it ith relatively little EPA and DHA, so compare the actual omega-3 content per serving.

  • Serving size: Many over-the-counter fish oil products require 6–8 capsules per day to reach a therapeutic dose. Professional-grade products are often more concentrated, allowing you to achieve the same dose with as little as 1 tablespoon of liquid or just 2 capsules per day.
