Just One Thing

Yes, I know, it is the season of renewal, the season of resolutions and sadly for many of us, it can be the season we are most likely to fail in our goals for self improvement. I don’t know who dreamt up the idea of New Year's Resolutions, but whoever did probably didn’t imagine the subsequent wounded self-esteem and guilty regrets that would be an annual event for a lot of us.

However, as you know, I am all for improving and maintaining good health, and for some of us that requires  change, whether  lifestyle or diet modifications (or both), or maybe just a shift in attitude.

And maybe some of you know you need to make some changes to help improve your overall health and if that is where you’re at, great, but before making any grand plans,  reflect on what  the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said; “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step". Consider doing Just One Thing at a time, take baby steps because slow and steady wins the race.

Choose Just One Thing you can do every day and feel the success in this.  Then, once that Just One Thing is part of your routine, choose another Just One Thing, something small, but something that you can commit to every day. If you start with a solid foundation and build from there success is so much more attainable.

For example, if you know you need to exercise to improve your mental and physical health instead of over-committing to 45 min of exercise 4 days a week, how about starting with a 5 min walk every day OR starting with doing 5 pushups every day.

Once that Just One Thing is a part of your regular routine, then you can increase your commitment, but not before you have the basics solidly in place as a part of your schedule.

Too many of us have an all or nothing, go hard or go home attitude, but this often is a recipe for disaster, so why not try a different tactic this year.

And as Albert Einstein once said, “We cannot solve problems at the same level of thinking that we were at when we created those problems.”
